8th National Youth Workshop on Culture and Heritage

The Kenya National Commission for UNESCO (KNATCOM), which serves as the focal point for UNESCO programmes and activities in Kenya, hosted the Eighth National Youth Workshop on Culture and Heritage at Milimani Garden Resort in Bungoma County from 17 to 22 May 2026.

The workshop was organised with the primary goal of promoting Kenya's rich culture and heritage while actively engaging young people in its conservation. It also aimed to strengthen UNESCO's contribution toward building more just, equitable, accessible, and peaceful societies — key pillars in advancing sustainable peace and development across Kenya.

The event brought together leading heritage experts drawn from a pool of UNESCO Culture and Heritage specialists. Delivery of the programme was carried out through a diverse mix of lectures, presentations, group activities, and practical sessions. A highlight of the workshop was the celebration of African World Heritage Day (AWHD), which was marked through hands-on conservation activities undertaken by the participating youth.

The event was coordinated under the leadership of Dr. James G. Njogu, Acting Secretary General/CEO of KNATCOM, with logistical and programme correspondence handled by Mr. Julius S. Mwahunga, Deputy Director of Culture Programme.
